Betta splendens, or betta fish (their common name), come from a decent sized family of fish, often called Siamese fighting fish. These incredible fish are more often than not really vivid in color, and are more often than not two to three inches long. Bettas are a specific kind of fish called a labyrinth fish. The female betta then releases her eggs to the male who then fertilizes the eggs. The male betta uses his mouth to gather all of the fertilized eggs and put them gently into the nest of bubbles. The fertilized eggs remain in the safety of the nest of bubbles while they hatch and are able to swim on their own.
A good number of people say bettas have a lifespan of just two to three years, however in a proper aquarium, they regularly live to be as old as 8 years.
